Help fades for rest home residents battling big trucks By Emily O’Connell LADY WIGRAM Retirement Home residents trying to stop trucks rolling through their quiet neighbourhood are unlikely to get the support of the city council. Halswell Ward city councillor Anne Galloway has told Western News and residents that a bylaw is not likely to solve the problem. Residents have been lobbying since April when they met with Cr Galloway and Wigram MP Megan Woods asking Anne for a bylaw to Galloway stop trucks being allowed to drive through Lodestar Ave. It is a short cut to work sites in the area and in Selwyn. Their campaign made international headlines recently when Lady Wigram owner John Tooby confronted four residents who had put a sign on the rest home’s fence pleading for truck drivers to use another route. Mr Tooby abused and swore at them and demanded they take the sign down. The tirade was recorded by a Star journalist who

was photographing the residents when Mr Tooby arrived. The city council is due to bring in the city-wide Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2017 by the end of the year which will allow restrictions

to be placed on streets. It will include allowing for the banning of vehicles from being parked on the road if they’re advertised for sale, vehicles from parking on berms, and stopping

heavy vehicles on certain streets. But Cr Galloway doubts whether the bylaw will apply to Lodestar Ave. She says speed is the main issue, not heavy trucks.

Inside

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK YOU HAVE to sympathise with Lady Wigram Retirement Village residents in their bid to stop trucks using Lodestar Ave. They’ve just lost who thought was an ally in city councillor Anne Galloway (see page 1). Our photo is the tip of the iceberg of what is happening there. It shows what people living on Lodestar Ave have to put up with, day in and day out. The trucks are taking a short cut through this residential street and the authorities don’t seem to care. Residents went to Galloway and Wigram MP Megan Woods for help in April. But Galloway says a city-wide bylaw probably won’t work in Lodestar Ave. She’s got to be joking! So it looks like it is time for new Government MP Megan Woods to step up. – Barry Clarke

Pool location options revealed By Bridget Rutherford THE FIVE locations being considered for the $21 million Linwood Woolston pool have been revealed. City council head of recreation, sports and events John Filsell said staff were looking at the old nursery site on Smith St, the old Linwood Service Centre site over the road, Woolston Park, Bromley Park and the northwest parcel of Linwood Park. “On initial assessment, 141 Smith St, the old nursery, had John Filsell notable advantages over other sites – however it is yet to be determined if a preferred status will be given to a particular site.” Mr Filsell said until a site was chosen, it was not yet known whether any buildings, including Linwood Service Centre, would need to be demolished. “Council will consider all the advantages and implications of any identified site before making a decision.” The community board room is still operating out of the Linwood Service Centre building

PREFERRED: The old nursery site on Smith St is one of five locations being looked at for the Linwood Woolston pool. on Smith St, but the centre and library is now based at Eastgate Shopping Centre. A report is being prepared for the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board seeking recommendations on what sites should be put forward for public consultation, Mr Filsell said. “The decision around site selection can only be made once consultation and engagement has been undertaken and an options report generated. This is expected early in 2018.”

Construction is meant to begin at the end of 2019, with $21,789,309 budgeted for the project, Mr Filsell said. He said the budget provided for funding from 2017/18 to 2020/21. But Linwood Ward city councillor Yani Johanson said the construction was originally meant to begin next year, and he could not understand why that had changed. “There’s an overwhelming desire for it and the council

Roar of vintage motorcycles on the beach By Sophie Cornish THE SOUND of vintage motorcycles revving will boom around New Brighton beach on Saturday. New Brighton was one of only of a handful of beaches in New Zealand used for organised racing during the early 1900s. But on Saturday they won’t be racing – the bikes will travel along the beach in a parade. The fifth annual Smash Palace Bike Show will focus on the late Geoff Hockley, a former bike enthusiast and author. Mr Hockley was a New Brighton identity and a founding member of the Pioneer Motorcycle Club. In the 1960s, Mr Hockley wrote A Tribute to A Gentleman about the history of the club. The event will be linked to the book and Mr Hockley’s son Tony will attend the event. Tony, 82, will be the judge of the ‘Gentleman’s Tribute’ on the day, an award for who he believes is the standout bike and rider on the day. Event organiser Anna May said previous motorcycle shows in New Brighton have been a success. However, this is the first year the bikes will travel on the beach.

Calendar of sports legends By Sophie Cornish NEW BRIGHTON rugby legend Ian Penrose is one of many eastern suburbs sporting greats to feature in a new calendar. Mr Penrose, 76, played 103 games for Canterbury, including 64 as captain, from 1963-71. Local sports heroes over the decades will be acknowledged in the New Brighton Museum’s 2018 calendar. Each year the museum has a different theme for its calendar. Mr Penrose said he was honoured to feature in it. “I always find them (the calendars) very interesting having lived down there for so long,” said Mr Penrose. Museum secretary Peggy Butterfield said the idea came about when she was looking through an old Aranui speedway book. She noticed east Christchurch had three world speedway champions. Ivan Mauger, Ronnie Moore, Barry Briggs and another top rider in Geoff Mardon. “So serious research began late last year, and we discovered the east can certainly produce champions in all sports,” said Mrs Butterfield. •The calendar costs $10. It can be purchased at the museum or Home and Castle Hardware, New Brighton Mall.

By Jono Edwards, WHEN SAVANNA Leigh turned 16 in June she tore the packaging off a chocolate block to find a shimmering golden ticket. She knew exactly what that meant. “Charlie Bucket, I’m going to be him,” the Halswell girl said when she realised her dream of re-creating Charlie and the Chocolate Factory through a tour of Cadbury World in Dunedin. Savanna, who has Down’s syndrome, said she watched both film versions of the Roald Dahl classic “lots and lots.’’ She travelled to Dunedin for the tour with her parents, two siblings, uncle and grandmother. The night before visiting the factory, she stuck the ticket above her bed in anticipation. “I’m so excited, I just can’t believe it,’’ she said before entering the building. The chocolate waterfall from the films was something she was especially keen to see. Mother Sue Leigh said she had thought about taking Savanna to the factory for some time. “She always talks about it. I

guess the closing of the factory gave us that push.’’ Savanna’s parents then slipped the ticket in a block of chocolate for her to find.

Her fascination with that world began when she was about eight-years-old, Mrs Leigh said. “Every day she must have music around her. She loves to sing. I think she loves the idea of walking into a factory and being able to explore things.’’ Savanna “loved it’’ and, as the family left the tour, she asked

when she could come back, Mrs Leigh said. Mrs Leigh said when Savanna returned to Riccarton High School after her trip, she was showing off to everyone. The family wanted to thank the staff, who gave the family a private tour and a free lunch. – Otago Daily Times

U-turn on Diamond Harbour Rest home’s truck battle ferry terminal bus stop plan By Sarla Donovan THE DIAMOND Harbour ferry terminal will retain two bus stops after a U-turn from the Lyttelton Port Company. But it’s not budging on a decision not to provide a dedicated pick-up/drop-off zone. The LPC has been under pressure from community groups over a move to reduce bus parking spaces from three to one and not provide a public drop off zone, as part of its staff car park development on Jetty 2. LPC Chief Executive Peter Davie said yesterday he had “listened to the concerns expressed by the Diamond Harbour Community Association and the Banks Peninsula Community Board about the negative impact reducing the bus service to one stop would have on people using the ferry. We have decided to retain two bus stops so there is no change to the 28 bus service, while the 535 will pick up and drop off people wanting to catch the ferry from Norwich Quay.” While they wouldn’t provide a dedicated pick up/drop off zone for private vehicles, LPC

would “facilitate access” for people who needed to drop-off goods, had young children or who were physically impaired, Mr Davie said. “Regular users . . . can apply for a permit to enable them to be dropped off and picked up close to the ferry. People who are not regular users, but need close access to the ferry, can phone LPC Security 24 hours a day, seven days a week to arrange entry. As a secondary option people can contact Black Cat Cruises to facilitate access.” Banks Peninsula Community Board Chairwoman Christine Wilson said the board was “delighted that LPC has revisited its plans.”

Stairs onto the Oxford Street overbridge are being reinstalled, reducing the walking distance to the ferry. “The community has been asking us to re-install these stairs and we are pleased to deliver this. We will undertake this work while we construct our staff car park for Waterfront House, LPC’s new operations and administration building. “The relocation of more than 50 of our staff to Waterfront House will have a positive impact on local businesses.” All work is scheduled to be completed before Christmas, with LPC’s administration and management teams relocating from Woolston.

•From page 1 “I doubt the new bylaw will be of any use. It seems that speed is the issue and the recommendation is for police to get more involved in monitoring this,” Cr Galloway said. The traffic and speed count report found an average of 1943 vehicles per day travelled on the road – which is a high volume for a local road. Data also indicated about 300 vehicles per day travelled at or above 60km/h. But rest home residents are disappointed. “I was hoping the traffic people, who know much more about this than I do, could sort it out but it doesn’t seem that way,” one told Western News. He has asked for anonymity because of the fallout from other residents over the Tooby outburst. He said trucks rumble past as early as 4.30am, waking them up and causing things to shake. The report suggested speed humps might help. But the resident said that would only cause more noise when the trucks went over them. Cr Galloway said the city council wants people to feel safe walking about their neighbourhood.

MESSAGE: Residents were told to take down this protest sign.

“We don’t want elderly folk to feel stressed if they hear people racing outside their residence,” she said. Wigram MP Megan Woods said she will have to look at the report and speak to Cr Galloway about what they can do. She said it’s a real issue because unlike most residential streets, the residents are generally home during the working day. City council traffic engineer Edwin Tiong will ask police to patrol the area more regularly. Mr Tiong will also conduct another traffic count next year and follow-up with the village management to identify any specific day or time of the week when these issues are more prevalent.

Southern ChiropraCtiC 3 kennedys bush rd, halswell (upstairs)

New premises for Southern Chiropractic The move to bigger and brighter premises means Southern Chiropractic clients will feel envigorated when they visit principal chiropractor Andre Grob. “I have been based for 10 years in Halswell so really wanted to find a location that was still accessible for my patients in this area and also easy for those who travel further afield for treatment,” Andre says. The rooms are down the driveway opposite Our Vet at Halswell on 3 Kennedy’s Bush Rd. There is plenty of parking on the street in front of the building which houses Mike Pero and other businesses. A generous waiting area has standing room or low and high seating, depending on where clients find it most comfortable. The treatment room is spacious and allows those who are seeking chiropractic care ample room to talk to Andre about what they are experiencing as well as a separate area for him to treat you. For those who may not be aware chiropractic treatment isn’t just about specialised spinal adjustment. The effective use of low level laser treatment

for assisting in the healing of deep tissue and joint problems has been used for more than 40 years. This treatment, which uses photo stimulation of mitochondria in cells, is able to penetrate into the site of injury to promote healing and reduce inflammation – relaxing muscles and reducing pain. Andre has seen how the non-invasive treatment has resulted in impressive results for his clients. The treatment, which only takes 15 to 20 minutes, is especially effective with muscle and joint pain, stiffness associated with arthritis, neck and lower back pain. It is approved by the FDA and Meta analysis by the Lancet Medical Journal also endorses the treatment saying it can reduce pain intensity, disability and the reoccurrence of pain. Andre can also provide other treatments including adjustments, exercises, stretches and muscle therapy – to readjust the body or help it heal from conditions that are physical in origin. These can include problems such as back pain, muscle spasms, headaches and poor posture. It is also completely appropriate to

receive chiropractic care even though you may not have symptoms. Unlike standard medical doctors who you visit when you have symptoms that need to be treated, chiropractors offer adjustments to improve spinal alignment and overall wellbeing – and can prevent the pain or other symptoms even starting.

ACC recognises chiropractors as primary health care specialists when it comes to spinal care so you do not need a referral from a GP to seek treatment for a back or neck injury as a result of accidental causes. In the event of an accident we can initiate a claim directly and if it is accepted, treatment costs will be subsidised.

Regular oil changes important for engine maintenance Tony Wessels and his team of qualified technicians at Diesel Doctor in Addington specialise in servicing all types of latemodel vehicles. However, Tony says that over recent years they have been finding more and more vehicles are not being serviced as regularly as they should be. “Vehicle manufacturers are giving longer service periods, and people don’t understand why they need to have the oil changed regularly,” Tony says. “Changing the oil and filter cleans out impurities before they start doing damage to the engine.” That’s just one of the many reasons why changing your oil regularly is much better for your engine than leaving it too long, and motorists should do so more regularly, in spite of what manufacturers suggest, Tony advises. As he points out: “The oil is really the lifeblood of the engine. “We have been seeing major engine failures because of poor maintenance. The newer engines have a finer tolerance so there is potentially more chance of major damage occurring than with older vehicles.” The cost of changing the oil can be another factor for owners, with manufacturers recommending synthetic oil, which is quite expensive. But as Tony points out: “In some cases, a good-quality mineral oil may be of more benefit.”

To enquire about regular servicing for your diesel or petrol vehicle, contact Tony at Diesel Doctor, phone 338 8884, or call into 288 Lincoln Road, Addington, where there is plenty of offstreet parking available.

St Andrew’s dominate Zonta awards By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S College athletes cleaned up at the Zonta Sports Awards last week. Previous winner and former world under-23 cross-country mountain bike champion Anton Cooper spoke at the awards which were initially created to recognise the high achievements of young sportswomen in Canterbury, but later became a combined women’s and men’s event. FOCUS ON HEALTH Modern diet leads to illness! It’s not what you eat but what you absorb Two Australian Naturopaths Stephen and Shane noticed at the end of the 20th century more and more of their patients were experiencing gut, bowel and digestive issues that were often leading to more serious chronic health conditions. Being Naturopaths they wanted to find what was going wrong and began extensive research. What they found was although their clients were generally eating good food they were not obtaining all the nutrients required for good health from this food. Further research showed one of the main problems was the digestive system, “it’s not what you eat but what you absorb.” Another well-known problem is the soils the crops are grown in have been depleted of many trace elements and other nutrients that are known to be essential for good health and therefore the crops and food are also depleted. If we do not obtain all the nutrients we require the body will compensate to some degree but a lack of too many nutrients will eventually lead to health issues. Based on this they developed VITAL GREENS, a nutrient dense powdered formula that provides superior absorption as well as comprehensive nutrition. They decided on a powdered formula that could be made

as a great tasting drink because liquid nutrition is the easiest way for the body to absorb nutrients especially if digestive issues are present. The formula provides 76 vital ingredients that work together in synergy optimising each other’s absorption and benefits. Vital Greens contains a carefully balanced blend of nutritionally rich greens, vegetables, fruits, minerals, vitamins, essential fatty acids, plant and herbal extracts, superfoods, powerful antioxidants, probiotics, essential amino acids, digestive enzymes, fibre plus a uniquely alkalising pea protein. It provides superior nutrition to a multivitamin and anyone will benefit from it. It is designed to provide all the nutrients the body requires for good health. It is also ideal for those in poor health, those recovering from injury or sickness, children, athletes, poor eaters and the elderly. It is also suitable for people with dietary restrictions and is gluten, wheat and dairy free. Vital Greens will help remove toxic waste from the body while supporting all organs. You’ll often notice more energy and endurance, better sleep, a more positive mood, skin problems improving, less sickness, improved eyesight and overall better more optimum health. Further information and how to obtain the maximum benefits from Vital Greens as well as tastings is available from the Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, Phone: 388-5757. Anxious Kids What can you do? We are all aware that anxiety in our children has risen considerably over the last 7 years, the forces that rattled our city have continued to rattle its citizens and this has impacted on how our children exist and respond in their day to day lives. Of course this is not the only contributor and it must be remembered that any mental health problem is not a clear cut issue. However parents, teachers, doctors and other people closely working with our children and young adults have noticed a change in behaviour. They are seeing things such as increased irritability, aggression, separation anxiety, sleep disturbances and moodiness. The normal response of anxiety to a future challenging event has become an out of proportion reaction to normal daily events and this is where the problem lies. So what natural options are there to help support children’s mental health? Probiotics - Promote healthy balance of chemicals in our brain The connection between the brain and the gut is key to understanding and maintaining good mental health. You need a well balanced microbiome (gut flora), with an abundance of good bacteria to ensure the creation and regulation of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that send messages to and around our brain. Serotonin is one of these neurotransmitters - low levels are associated with anxiety and other problems such as depression. It is important to note

that the majority of serotonin is actually made in our gut! Fish oils - Reduce cellular inflammation Fish oils are a source of Omega 3 fatty acids, unless we eat at least 3 - 4 meals of oily fish per week we generally aren't getting enough of this essential fatty acid (EFA). The result is an imbalance between this antiinflammatory EFA and the inflammatory EFA omega 6 (found in most animal products, cereals, vegetable oils). Low levels of omega 3 (particularly DHA) in the brain can result in increased inflammation and the disruption of signaling between nerves, this contributes to conditions such as anxiety. Taking a supplement that also includes vitamin D will help increase the absorption of the EFA’s. B Vitamins & Magnesium - correct nutritional deficiency Low levels of nutrients such as B vitamins and magnesium have been linked to anxiety and other mental health conditions. When we are under stress our bodies use more of these nutrients and our requirement is higher. B vitamins are necessary for the production and release of neurotransmitters, while magnesium helps to regulate the nervous system. Magnesium helps to relax, calm and protect the cardiovascular system which can be put under extra stress when suffering from anxiety. Theanine - promote a calm but alert state of mind Another really helpful nutrient is L-theanine, this is an amino acid found in green tea. The action of theanine is to relax without sedation - basically it encourages an alert but relaxed state of mind and in doing so is very effective at reducing anxiety. There are also other remedies such as Bach flower remedies, essential oils and herbs that can make a big difference in your child’s mental health. Herbal teas such as Passionflower, Chamomile, Lemon Balm and Licorice are all helpful to encourage a feeling of calm. Bach flowers can be individually prescribed to suit the individual child’s emotional personality, they are very effective in helping to reduce feelings of fear, loneliness, fatigue, hopelessness, restlessness and sadness. Our Herbalist Nadine, is available to prescribe Bach flower remedies as well as herbal formulas and give advice on which nutrients are the most suitable. Clinic offers easy solution to varicose veins If varicose veins are a problem for you, the dedicated, professional team at Transform Clinic in Mandeville Street Riccarton can provide the perfect solution. Firstly, they will give you a free assessment of your veins, and then suggest the appropriate method of treatment, depending on the condition of the veins. There are two methods available – endo-venous laser treatment, which is used for both smaller and larger veins, and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. Both are easy and straightforward, and you can be fully active immediately afterwards, without needing to take any time off work, or curtail your normal activities. The only requirement is for you to wear special stockings for two weeks following treatment, and daily walking is recommended. Both these treatments give long-term relief from the pain and discomfort of varicose veins, and as Transform Clinic’s Jenny Little points out, they have become the treatment method of today, with surgical removal of varicose veins now considered obsolete. Jenny advises having treatment as early as possible when varicose veins start to appear, as left untreated they may lead to venous ulcers and venous eczema, although

if these have developed, Transform Clinic can treat them as well. Transform Clinic also offers a full range of appearance medicine options, including skin rejuvenation and skin-tightening treatments designed to improve skin quality and enhance self-esteem. They remove superficial veins on the legs and face, and also provide mole mapping, mole removal and primary skin cancer removal. Their website, www.transformclinic.co.nz, has information on all the various treatments available. “We are a ‘one-stop shop’ for all cosmetic medicine treatments,” says Jenny. 4 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 3 toilets | 2 living rooms | 1 office/study | 2 car-garage | Listing ID BE192909

Locations like this don’t come up often but with our vendors committed to a move overseas, this is a rare opportunity to settle somewhere very special. In a park like setting with gently sloping lawns and lush, established gardens the property connects directly to the waterfront via a pathway. With nothing in the way, it’s a magnificent panorama out to the Lyttelton Harbour and surrounding hills. Peaceful and ever changing, this must be the ultimate antidote to life’s daily stresses. The classic homestead sits at the top of

the property enjoying the best of the views and sun. Built with family in mind there are four bedrooms, two living, 2 sunrooms and a large library/office that could be a fifth bedroom. The main family area is open plan with a huge kitchen at the heart. Granite benches and state of the art appliances make this a home-cook’s paradise. The dining area and adjoining living both open directly to a large deck and the ever-present vista. A wood burner with a feature stone surround adds the cosy warmth of real flame. Adjoining these spaces is the second

living room, which in turn connects to a sunny rear facing conservatory and courtyard. Upstairs is the master suite, library and a second sunroom with views right to Godley Head - the perfect spot to watch ships come and go, with yachts in the foreground and kids jumping off the pier at the bottom of your garden. There are two luxury bathrooms one being ensuite. There is two car garaging and tons of off street parking for the whole clan. preconceptions of classical music being 'stuffy' or 'intimidating' by presenting a fresh and approachable ethos that appeals to listeners from all walks of life. e SOAR programme prepares audiences for new heights and perspectives. Weaving through changing tapestries, you'll find yourself adri in daydreams (Ireland) where life's complexity is seemingly simplified (Ritchie), primordial soundscapes pacify (Ker), and naivety is blissfully deliberate like a game of hide and seek (Schubert).

NZTrio, New Zealand's leading piano trio concludes its 2017 Christchurch concerts with Soar this November with guest violinist and fellow Mainlander, Manu Berkeljon. Cellist Ashley Brown and pianist Sarah Watkins are delighted to be working with Manu, who is originally from the West Coast and currently based in Sweden with a position in the Dalasinfoniettan orchestra, to bring this powerfully moving programme to Christchurch audiences, including the world premiere of Anthony Ritchie's Childhood and the NZ premiere of Onaia by Dorothy Ker. Described as a 'national treasure' and 'New Zealand's most indispensable ensemble' (William Dart, NZ Herald), NZTrio is renowned for their eclectic repertoire, outstanding talent, and warm kiwi stage presence. ey smash outmoded
