Help fades for rest home residents battling big trucks By Emily O’Connell LADY WIGRAM Retirement Home residents trying to stop trucks rolling through their quiet neighbourhood are unlikely to get the support of the city council. Halswell Ward city councillor Anne Galloway has told Western News and residents that a bylaw is not likely to solve the problem. Residents have been lobbying since April when they met with Cr Galloway and Wigram MP Megan Woods asking Anne for a bylaw to Galloway stop trucks being allowed to drive through Lodestar Ave. It is a short cut to work sites in the area and in Selwyn. Their campaign made international headlines recently when Lady Wigram owner John Tooby confronted four residents who had put a sign on the rest home’s fence pleading for truck drivers to use another route. Mr Tooby abused and swore at them and demanded they take the sign down. The tirade was recorded by a Star journalist who

was photographing the residents when Mr Tooby arrived. The city council is due to bring in the city-wide Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2017 by the end of the year which will allow restrictions
to be placed on streets. It will include allowing for the banning of vehicles from being parked on the road if they’re advertised for sale, vehicles from parking on berms, and stopping
heavy vehicles on certain streets. But Cr Galloway doubts whether the bylaw will apply to Lodestar Ave. She says speed is the main issue, not heavy trucks.

Our photo is the tip of the iceberg of what is happening there. It shows what people living on Lodestar Ave have to put up with, day in and day out. The trucks are taking a short cut through this residential street and the authorities don’t seem to care. Residents went to Galloway and Wigram MP Megan Woods for help in April. But Galloway says a city-wide bylaw probably won’t work in Lodestar Ave. She’s got to be joking! So it looks like it is time for new Government MP Megan Woods to step up. – Barry Clarke

Pool location options revealed By Bridget Rutherford THE FIVE locations being considered for the $21 million Linwood Woolston pool have been revealed. City council head of recreation, sports and events John Filsell said staff were looking at the old nursery site on Smith St, the old Linwood Service Centre site over the road, Woolston Park, Bromley Park and the northwest parcel of Linwood Park. “On initial assessment, 141 Smith St, the old nursery, had John Filsell notable advantages over other sites – however it is yet to be determined if a preferred status will be given to a particular site.” Mr Filsell said until a site was chosen, it was not yet known whether any buildings, including Linwood Service Centre, would need to be demolished. “Council will consider all the advantages and implications of any identified site before making a decision.” The community board room is still operating out of the Linwood Service Centre building
PREFERRED: The old nursery site on Smith St is one of five locations being looked at for the Linwood Woolston pool. on Smith St, but the centre and library is now based at Eastgate Shopping Centre. A report is being prepared for the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board seeking recommendations on what sites should be put forward for public consultation, Mr Filsell said. “The decision around site selection can only be made once consultation and engagement has been undertaken and an options report generated. This is expected early in 2018.”
Construction is meant to begin at the end of 2019, with $21,789,309 budgeted for the project, Mr Filsell said. He said the budget provided for funding from 2017/18 to 2020/21. But Linwood Ward city councillor Yani Johanson said the construction was originally meant to begin next year, and he could not understand why that had changed. “There’s an overwhelming desire for it and the council

just needs to get on and get it done.” He said everyone agreed the nursery site was the best option. The former Woolston Outdoor Pool, which sat next to the old Woolston School, was removed in 2006. Roar of vintage motorcycles on the beach By Sophie Cornish THE SOUND of vintage motorcycles revving will boom around New Brighton beach on Saturday. New Brighton was one of only of a handful of beaches in New Zealand used for organised racing during the early 1900s. But on Saturday they won’t be racing – the bikes will travel along the beach in a parade. The fifth annual Smash Palace Bike Show will focus on the late Geoff Hockley, a former bike enthusiast and author. Mr Hockley was a New Brighton identity and a founding member of the Pioneer Motorcycle Club. In the 1960s, Mr Hockley wrote A Tribute to A Gentleman about the history of the club. The event will be linked to the book and Mr Hockley’s son Tony will attend the event. Tony, 82, will be the judge of the ‘Gentleman’s Tribute’ on the day, an award for who he believes is the standout bike and rider on the day. Event organiser Anna May said previous motorcycle shows in New Brighton have been a success. However, this is the first year the bikes will travel on the beach.

Calendar of sports legends By Sophie Cornish NEW BRIGHTON rugby legend Ian Penrose is one of many eastern suburbs sporting greats to feature in a new calendar. Mr Penrose, 76, played 103 games for Canterbury, including 64 as captain, from 1963-71. Local sports heroes over the decades will be acknowledged in the New Brighton Museum’s 2018 calendar. Each year the museum has a different theme for its calendar. Mr Penrose said he was honoured to feature in it. “I always find them (the calendars) very interesting having lived down there for so long,” said Mr Penrose. Museum secretary Peggy Butterfield said the idea came about when she was looking through an old Aranui speedway book. She noticed east Christchurch had three world speedway champions. Ivan Mauger, Ronnie Moore, Barry Briggs and another top rider in Geoff Mardon. “So serious research began late last year, and we discovered the east can certainly produce champions in all sports,” said Mrs Butterfield. •The calendar costs $10. It can be purchased at the museum or Home and Castle Hardware, New Brighton Mall.

By Jono Edwards, WHEN SAVANNA Leigh turned 16 in June she tore the packaging off a chocolate block to find a shimmering golden ticket. She knew exactly what that meant. “Charlie Bucket, I’m going to be him,” the Halswell girl said when she realised her dream of re-creating Charlie and the Chocolate Factory through a tour of Cadbury World in Dunedin. Savanna, who has Down’s syndrome, said she watched both film versions of the Roald Dahl classic “lots and lots.’’ She travelled to Dunedin for the tour with her parents, two siblings, uncle and grandmother. The night before visiting the factory, she stuck the ticket above her bed in anticipation. “I’m so excited, I just can’t believe it,’’ she said before entering the building. The chocolate waterfall from the films was something she was especially keen to see. Mother Sue Leigh said she had thought about taking Savanna to the factory for some time. “She always talks about it. I

guess the closing of the factory gave us that push.’’ Savanna’s parents then slipped the ticket in a block of chocolate for her to find.
Her fascination with that world began when she was about eight-years-old, Mrs Leigh said. “Every day she must have music around her. She loves to sing. I think she loves the idea of walking into a factory and being able to explore things.’’ Savanna “loved it’’ and, as the family left the tour, she asked

U-turn on Diamond Harbour Rest home’s truck battle ferry terminal bus stop plan By Sarla Donovan THE DIAMOND Harbour ferry terminal will retain two bus stops after a U-turn from the Lyttelton Port Company. But it’s not budging on a decision not to provide a dedicated pick-up/drop-off zone. The LPC has been under pressure from community groups over a move to reduce bus parking spaces from three to one and not provide a public drop off zone, as part of its staff car park development on Jetty 2. LPC Chief Executive Peter Davie said yesterday he had “listened to the concerns expressed by the Diamond Harbour Community Association and the Banks Peninsula Community Board about the negative impact reducing the bus service to one stop would have on people using the ferry. We have decided to retain two bus stops so there is no change to the 28 bus service, while the 535 will pick up and drop off people wanting to catch the ferry from Norwich Quay.” While they wouldn’t provide a dedicated pick up/drop off zone for private vehicles, LPC
would “facilitate access” for people who needed to drop-off goods, had young children or who were physically impaired, Mr Davie said. “Regular users . . . can apply for a permit to enable them to be dropped off and picked up close to the ferry. People who are not regular users, but need close access to the ferry, can phone LPC Security 24 hours a day, seven days a week to arrange entry. As a secondary option people can contact Black Cat Cruises to facilitate access.” Banks Peninsula Community Board Chairwoman Christine Wilson said the board was “delighted that LPC has revisited its plans.”
Stairs onto the Oxford Street overbridge are being reinstalled, reducing the walking distance to the ferry. “The community has been asking us to re-install these stairs and we are pleased to deliver this. We will undertake this work while we construct our staff car park for Waterfront House, LPC’s new operations and administration building. “The relocation of more than 50 of our staff to Waterfront House will have a positive impact on local businesses.” All work is scheduled to be completed before Christmas, with LPC’s administration and management teams relocating from Woolston.

The traffic and speed count report found an average of 1943 vehicles per day travelled on the road – which is a high volume for a local road. Data also indicated about 300 vehicles per day travelled at or above 60km/h. But rest home residents are disappointed. “I was hoping the traffic people, who know much more about this than I do, could sort it out but it doesn’t seem that way,” one told Western News. He has asked for anonymity because of the fallout from other residents over the Tooby outburst. He said trucks rumble past as early as 4.30am, waking them up and causing things to shake. The report suggested speed humps might help. But the resident said that would only cause more noise when the trucks went over them. Cr Galloway said the city council wants people to feel safe walking about their neighbourhood.

“We don’t want elderly folk to feel stressed if they hear people racing outside their residence,” she said. Wigram MP Megan Woods said she will have to look at the report and speak to Cr Galloway about what they can do. She said it’s a real issue because unlike most residential streets, the residents are generally home during the working day. City council traffic engineer Edwin Tiong will ask police to patrol the area more regularly. Mr Tiong will also conduct another traffic count next year and follow-up with the village management to identify any specific day or time of the week when these issues are more prevalent.

Regular oil changes important for engine maintenance Tony Wessels and his team of qualified technicians at Diesel Doctor in Addington specialise in servicing all types of latemodel vehicles. However, Tony says that over recent years they have been finding more and more vehicles are not being serviced as regularly as they should be. “Vehicle manufacturers are giving longer service periods, and people don’t understand why they need to have the oil changed regularly,” Tony says. “Changing the oil and filter cleans out impurities before they start doing damage to the engine.” That’s just one of the many reasons why changing your oil regularly is much better for your engine than leaving it too long, and motorists should do so more regularly, in spite of what manufacturers suggest, Tony advises. As he points out: “The oil is really the lifeblood of the engine. “We have been seeing major engine failures because of poor maintenance. The newer engines have a finer tolerance so there is potentially more chance of major damage occurring than with older vehicles.” The cost of changing the oil can be another factor for owners, with manufacturers recommending synthetic oil, which is quite expensive. But as Tony points out: “In some cases, a good-quality mineral oil may be of more benefit.”

St Andrew’s dominate Zonta awards By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S College athletes cleaned up at the Zonta Sports Awards last week. Previous winner and former world under-23 cross-country mountain bike champion Anton Cooper spoke at the awards which were initially created to recognise the high achievements of young sportswomen in Canterbury, but later became a combined women’s and men’s event. St Andrew’s had winners in five of the six award categories. Lawrence Arundell took out the boys award for his involvement in the school’s trap shooting team. Christina Shepherd won the award for outstanding achievement by a female athlete with a disability for her efforts in athletics this year. Rower Ben Taylor won the award for outstanding achievement by a sportsman in one sport. Taylor, who lives in West Melton, and teammate Thomas Russel, brought home a silver medal at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Bulgaria with the New Zealand junior men’s coxless quad.
